Fez Dispenser - "This Is Trip-Bop"
(Skin & Barrel Music 2003, snb005)

Uploaded to Aural Innovations: September 2003

This is the second release by Fez Dispenser. See Aural Innovations April 2003 issue for a review of the first one. This is a solo project from Los Angeles based musician and producer Matthew Thorne. How to describe this music????????? I think Trip Bop is a good description. I am not into Hip Hop and don't really know what that sounds like but the info sheet says this is not Hip hop and I buy that. What you do get is some sort of mixture of cool rhythms and samples that create 3-5 minute journeys (the last track being an exception at 12 minutes). Each track has some cool elements, whether it be off beat rhythms, samples of strange stuff, reggae, jazzy influences via the way the piano or drums are played or just plain fucking with your head stuff. This is quite an amazing musical journey for those willing to take the journey.
