Shovelhead - "Red Sky Horizon"
(self-released 2003)

Uploaded to Aural Innovations: June 2004

This is the second self produced CD by this New Jersey band. This is a damn hard CD to review. I have heard it many times now and still can’t find the right words to describe it. Some of the songs are loose jamming songs (like the title track). Crop Duster reminds me of the New Jersey band CORE. Bottom is a very fast Motorhead inspired song. Riff is like Ace of Spades in a way. The Weight is a 7 minute song that lets the band stretch out and flex their music muscles and show the bluesy side to the band. It starts slow but builds into a heavy foot stomping rocker! Uncle Jesse is an excellent 70s style rocker with some jamming guitar! Moon Shine Blind is a great number. Enough said! Bastard begins with a bass line but then the guitars kick in and they go into overdrive and pummel you down with some hard stuff but then let up and do it again! Amazing Grace closes the CD and is an unexpected treat. The band is currently in the studio mixing a live CD for release this year. As far as I know the band only ever play gigs in the New Jersey-New York area.
