Aphelion - Franticode
(Lizard Records CD0054)

From Aural Innovations April 2010 update

This is pretty damn intense progressive jazz fusion stuff dominated by some ripping guitar by Matteo. I just reviewed Agah Bahari’s CD of all instrumental stuff and it is more heavy metal than this but the keyboard player and co-producer is who mixed this CD. Anyway, the CD starts off with the great Hercoloubus and right away you can get a feel for the melodic playing of Matteo and the type of interplay between the players, with intense base, spacey but also driven keyboards. The track Dreaming in Fraticode is pretty amazing stuff with a super cool guitar sound and Matteo is not at all afraid to use a lot of effects. The piano really changes the mood as well. Brilliant track. The song Clouds over Tharsis starts with some cool sounds and reminds me of the Rick Ray band and it features guest guitarist Alex Stornello. Mercurial Sand starts with some spacey new age like keys and then the piano come in and this is followed by a lot of solos. The CD ends with Primordial Crossbreeding and this features a keyboards a bit more than the other tracks. If you dig intense musicianship and crazy song structures and time changes with advanced playing check this CD out.
