2600 Club - "GAK2" (self-released cassette)

From Aural Innovations #15 (April 2001)

2600 Club is a solo project by Vincent Abernathy of Waynesville, Ohio. What little music is here (about 20 minutes) seems to focus on electronic percussion workouts that include lots of spacey effects. Abernathy lays down repetitive percussion patterns that develop slowly but steadily. The synths embellish and give color to the percussion, and while they often stand out more at the forefront the rhythm is in control at all times. Things get a bit gratingly noisey at times though the percussion keeps things marching along which helped keep my attention. Interesting, though it comes across a bit as an stiff exercise or demonstration of some kind. Overall, I think this is one of those things that would work better as part of a larger work.
