Trigon - "Das Umo-Mandat"
(self-released 2003, Germany)
From Aural Innovations #24 (July 2003)
I have never heard of this band but when I found their web page a whole new world opened up. This is a band that has been recording a lot of stuff since 1990. They describe their music as heavy Zen Jazz. The band is a trio of Rainer Lange on guitar, Stefan Lange on bass and Daniel Beckmann on drums. The band has released 15 CDs they describe as Jams, 2 Studio CDs and 4 live CDs. The quality of this recording is quite good but the guitar is sometimes a little to far in the back for my tastes. Most of the songs are freeform guitar workouts with very competent backing musicians. But it is not stuff like Steve Via or Satriani. This is a more spaced out wah guitar with some distortion. The majority of the tracks are in the 2-5 minute range with a few longer tracks. It is all very freeform, not many chords played, mostly just guitar jams in a space rock kind of way and certainly inspired by the German bands of the early 70’s like Guru Guru. Some of it reminds me of a few Paul Chain tracks. I would like to hear more from the band and will! The band has a great policy of letting you download the full cds for a range of €2.5 to €10.
