My Education - "Italian"
(Thirty Ghosts Records 2005, TGR-00092-4)
From Aural Innovations #31 (June 2005)
Hasn't the whole Indie Rock thing run it's course yet? This CD is especially sad because it's veteran musicians passing off this old generic sound as something new. This sounds like every band in Austin but with sub par production, at the same time it's really good, I guess? After having played experimental shows the last few years this sounds like the boring norm that I'm trying to get away from, but nationally this is probably very cutting edge? At least there's no damn anguished male vocals yet. Sounds like every Space Rock band from ten years ago. This is low energy, safe music. It's hard to believe these guys are getting big, but it blows away Ashlee Simpson.
My Education is a six-piece instrumental rock outfit hailing from Austin, Texas. The band formed in 1999 and features former and current members of Stars of the Lid, Ultrasound, and Cinders. My Education's founding members relocated to Austin, Texas from San Angelo, Texas and "promptly found themselves frightening clubgoers with their unique, yet unsettling sound"... at least that's what the press release says. Considering how much they mention recording at The Bubble (Austin Studio) the sound of the CD is kinda crappy. These guys are the last band to play this ten year old brand of droney Space Rock. It's so generic it's painful, but for people not familiar with this genre it would seem great, I guess? This is so boring and dull, please let it be over. Can I write the review only after three songs? So guys, here's more of your education.
