Taipuva Luotisuora - "I"
(Kaakao Records 002, CD)
From Aural Innovations #31 (June 2005)
Wow... another amazing Finnish band. The name means flexible plumb (adjective) Anyway, this is a great instrumental progressive space rock CD! The CD opens with the track, "Music for Kortela Space Hood Elevators"! This track is very inspired by the Finnish band, Hidria Spacefolk, with a similar groove and some nice additional instrumentation. This is a really a cool track with some great synthesizer. Next up is (all the rest of the titles are in Finnish!), "Tyvikasvun käsittely", and this starts with a guitar riff very inspired by Robert Fripp but then takes off in another dimension. "Muovia tehdään öljystä" begins with some acoustic guitar but then a quite heavy guitar riff kicks in. The track develops and builds, a bit like some of the God Speed you to earth, Black Emperor stuff and then it gets very mellow and spacey with a cool electronic ending. Track 4 (has a really long Finnish name) has some totally far out and cool synthesizer playing and a great heavy riff that sounds a lot like the "Om Riff" by Gong! I wonder if it is this track that the leader of the band plays the syntetisaattoriohjelmoint! "Koillispasaati" begins quite heavy but then drifts out into space and becomes a very beautiful track with many moods expressed in the 15 minute journey. The CD ends with the beautiful "Sohvatyynyjä jäännöslangoista" which begins with piano but soon the acoustic guitars float in and the song unfolds. I really look forward to hearing more by this great new band. Please check them out on the internet!
