Attrition - "Something Stirs: The Beginning 1981-1983"
(3Gods CD)
From Aural Innovations #35 (January 2007)
Attrition is the brainchild of Martin Bowes. The band began in 1981 and had its first release in 1982 (Death House). The band was part of the underground cassette tape culture and all of the material you hear is from those early cassette tapes and stuff the band produced on their 4 track recorder. You also get 3 live tracks from 1981 (with the only drummer they ever had!). The band has had a lot of line up changes but the music produced here is mainly Martin (drum programming and effects), Julia Waller (vocals), and Ashley Niblock (Synthesizer). The music presented here is mostly gothic, electronic darkwave stuff and quite experimental. Coil fans will like this as well. The last 3 tracks are the live tracks which feature Martin on bass, Robo on Drums (only Domus) and Ashley on synthesizer. A strange gothic post-punk vibe to this stuff for sure. Julia was an intense vocalist. A very interesting compilation CD.
