The Esoteric - "Subverter"
(Prosthetic Records)
From Aural Innovations #35 (January 2007)
Never heard of this Kansas based band but according to their web page they seem to spend most of their life touring. In addition, they have released like 11 albums, EPs and split CDs, with loads of bands. They are a five piece band that plays hardcore punk influenced heavy metal music. Very angry screaming vocals and heavy guitars, but the melody is there. A few songs like Science is Sexy have guitar riffs quite like Slayer, but the music is nowhere near as cool and you get quite tired of the singer screaming in your face all the time. Language is a Virus is a short 40 second experimental piece, one of the coolest things on the record actually, before the band blast back into Shipyards of Foreign Cities, which starts very melodic and is one of the most melodic on the record. Clone Culture and the Cut Up method ends the CD and has some pretty cool guitar playing while the singer continues to scream at you. Special music for special people but I ain't one of them. I should not forget to mention that the artwork in the middle of the CD is pretty damn cool.
