Robert Lawson - Not Everyone's Cup of Tea" (Tiny Tapes)
Robert Lawson - "Spanish Apple Magic"
From Aural Innovations #35 (January 2007)
Robert Lawson is a guitarist living in Spain who likes to release a lot of music. He just sent me these 3 CD-Rs that make a trilogy of sorts. I reviewed Before the Revolution previously but here are the two new CD-Rs. These are basically laid back instrumental jams with Robert and his friends. The tracks on these CDs almost all start with an audience, making it sound like it is from a concert but they are faded away. Not sure if it live in front of an audience or not but I don't think so. Anyway, Not Everyone's Cup of Tea has a pretty laid back Grateful Dead spacey vibe on the first two tracks (L'Afrique Shuffle, Harvest Festival). Starbound, the last track, is much more uptempo and also features organ and some really nice guitar playing. This was my favourite track. Spanish Apple Magic begins with a cool 16 minute version of Hey Joe. I was playing this CD in the car when I was driving Brant Bjork from the train station to a gig and he really thought it was cool. On the Cusp is pretty spacey and features some nice organ by Patrick French. This sets the ground for the spacey guitar by Robert. Ozone Blues ends the CD and features some slow stoned blues with some nice slide guitar. I like the second CD better than the first one. Keep it up Robert.
