Akhmed- Chicxulub
(RAIG R023)
From Aural Innovations #38 (Jan 2008)
I had never heard of this Australian band before and this is an archive release of a couple of EPs the band recorded in 2003 and 2005. A bit stoner rock, a bit post rock, and psychedelica. This reminded me a bit of a mixture between La Ira De Dios and My Sleeping Karma. The CD starts off with Kirrae. I really like the delay and the tension that builds in the track to start. IT has a very stoned sound and some quite heavy riffing in this instrumental track, which totally explodes at 7 minutes. Fans of Mammatus will like this. Ilanesia starts off very spacey but still has a huge sound. A bit of Colour Haze like influence in this track as well. Curvie also really builds up and takes you out into space. T=D is the first track to feature some vocals and again think a bit of Colour Haze, La Ira De Dios and you get a cool mixture. Love the effected guitar that spaces your brain. Viceroy has the band entering into true stoner rock singing “I see the space ritual”.. Chicken C is a more simple stoned piece. Ta Brockie starts off with a real old school Hawkwind feel. Welcome Mat is a slow spacey and bass heavy track. Jonah is also quite spacey with distorted instruments and some spaced out parts. The CD ends with Samar, which is an uptempo heavy and spacey track with some singing. Stoner rock…. Anyway, this is a fucking cool CD.. enjoy…
