The Stumps- The Black Wood
(Last Visible Dog 111)
From Aural Innovations #39 (May 2008)
The Stumps are a New Zealand noise-rock band formed in 2003. I would a call it psychedelic explorations in sound. It is pretty far out stuff with long slow journeys and experiments with feedback and sounds. While the bio cites comparisons to Dead C, Acid Mothers Temple and Fushitusha, there is not crazy or insane rock music on this CD. The whole CD is a slow laid back, dark (fairly), sometimes spacey soundtrack for movies type music. Real rock style drums are rarely heard. The booklet and cover don’t really state any specific tracks, although there is a hint on the back of the booklet with 4 song titles but there are 8 tracks on the CD and it all more or less runs together. A strange and interesting experiment… how successful, you will have to be the judge…
