The Terminals- Last Days of Sun
(Last Visible Dog 116)
From Aural Innovations #39 (May 2008)
I have never heard of this New Zealand band. The bio describes it as garage
rock with influences from Sonic Youth, but at least on the first two tracks the
guitar is not at all the focus. On track 3, the Sonic youth style guitar playing
comes into fashion. The singer reminds me of the guy from the Cult at times
for sure. This track has a really psychedelic stoned vibe to it. A lot of the
music is pretty laid back and the band are only really rocking on occasion.
The organ and keyboard really play a major role in the sound of this band. Different
Air reminds me of Johnny Cash mixed with the Doors. The title track is a very
melodic radio friendly ditty with some nice guitar and organ lines. Blue moon
is a moody organ based piece and really highlights the singer. Creepers is a
slow building track with a pretty cool groove and spaced out organ as the track
gets more and more psychedelic before a more heavy vibe comes into the music.
A great track. Whichever Way She Runs is a organ and vocal ballad with the bass
and guitar taking a backseat. Premonitions agains shows the band getting more
rocking with that distorted guitar but also intense organ. Crown of Teeth is
another very melodic one except for the noisy guitar at the end. In our Mind
is a bit Doors inspired. The CD ends with I Saw My Ghost, the only acoustic
number. Pretty cool stuff.
