Motorpsycho - "Little Lucid Moments"
(Rune Grammofon RCD2073)
From Aural Innovations #40 (September 2008)
Motorpsycho are back with yet another drummer on board this time. I have to say this is probably the bands best studio album ever. It is 4 long tracks in about one hour. It really showcases this great band and gives them the space and time to really play and get heavy and spaced out like they like to at their concerts, but do so within a song setting. The opening 21 minute Little Lucid Moments Suite starts off as a normal MP style rock-pop track, with Bent singing and then at 6 minutes it kicks into high gear and Snah takes over and the band really kicks it up a notch. Around 9 minutes they just go into a jam with killer playing. The vocals return around 11 1/2 minutes and it gets quite melodic again, but then kicks back hard before going into a very spacey part featuring Snah just exploring and then ripping it up in a noisy fashion. The track fades out with some acoustic guitar and is very melodic. Year Zero (A damage Report), the shortest track at 11:20, starts very mellow but slowly builds shifting colors between a dark mood and back into a more happy MP melodic way of doing things. There are vocals from about 4-6 minutes and then the band builds the track up in intensity and really taking off at 8 1/2 minutes with some intense drumming and guitar. She left on the Sunship begins with a heavy distorted bass line but then Snah comes in with a clean guitar and then hits the distortion at about 1 minute and the groove gets going. I really like the phaser effect on this song. It makes it quite spacey and then some really cool interaction between the musicians and some synthesizer mixed in as well. Great uptempo track. The 12 1/2 minute Alchemyst ends the CD and begins with a quite dark and spacey intro. The song slowly builds up as they repeat themselves over and over and then the drums and bass start to kick in as it gets faster and faster until the main riff kicks in at 3 1/2 minutes. Now it becomes your typical melodic MP song until 6 1/2 minutes, when it gets spacey again with some synthesizer and the same beginning riff comes back and the band just get really intense. A really great song and amazing album. I think it is the bands best ever and I can't wait to see where the band head to next.
