The Pocket Gods - "Plan Nub, Behind The Fridge"
(Nub Country Records 2010, NUB002012CD)
From Aural Innovations #41 (October 2010)
A talented lesser-known UK psychedelic band that certainly has something to say. Until I had received this CD fairly recently, I'd never even remotely heard of them. However, it turns out they have at least one other CD plus a couple of EP's available. Not including the intro and the outro cuts, there's a total of twelve well-played and well-crafted psych pop tunes to thoroughly soak yourself into. Songs like the awesome rocker Billy Childish Enters The Space Race, Perfect Blue, the all-psyched out I'm The Ed Wood Of Indie Pop (catchy song title), Alien Xmas Song, the power-packed Nipple Fight, Telstar Gurl and the somewhat stunning closer Zeta Reticuli shows the new fan(s) out there just what they're capable of. Line-up: Mark Lee - guitar, keyboards, drums & vocals, Claire Lee - bass and Annie Moeke - backing vocals. Pocket God's influences were that of the Beatles, Syd Barrett and Joy Division. 'Plan Nub, Behind The Fridge' would likely bring something good to fans of the Zombies, the previously mentioned Syd Barrett, Hawkwind (Robert Calvert-era), Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, Asteroid No. 4 and Spacemen 3. Saw that the duration of this CD is 37 minutes. It would appear that the Pocket Gods followed the old unwritten rule of leaving your patrons wanting more - not less. Either way, it definitely makes for fine listening.
