Census of Hallucinations - "Anthology (1999-2009)"

Anthology (1999-2009) is a double compilation of the best pieces by English band Census of Hallucinations from the last decade. This 26-track retrospective is compiled and edited by Ohead’s Dave Hendry and this keyboard wizard is now also part of the Stone Premonitions collective and plays on the brand new Stone Premonitions 2010 album that I will also try to review soon. Tim Jones’ and Terri~B’s Cencus of Hallucinations combines in their music psychedelia, space rock and prog, folk as well as pop and even more electronic sound and has always been my favorite of the Stone Premonitions bands, maybe along with Krom Lek and Mr. Quimpy’s Beard. Their ten actual albums include a lot of great tracks so Hendry had a lot to choose from. He has successfully edited these tracks into a seamlessly flowing whole so this album is for example a very good way to get into the psychedelic world of Census of Hallucinations.

Some of the best tracks in the first disc are maybe the 12-minute-long, laid-back “Spirit of the Cat” that has percussion and delay guitar at first and gets faster and pretty psychedelic later on and the bit heavier rocking space/psych rock blast “The Gremling Song”. The most enjoyable pieces for me on the second disc are the excellent ”My God, It’s Full of Stars” that has and an unbelievably amazing, psychedelic space atmosphere with some sax and “The Moon” that at first has a bit kraut rock styled, repetitive and pounding rhythm and then gets through folk into ambient with floating guitar and ethnic percussion. There are of course lots of other great songs in there! If you are not familiar with this band yet, I’d say it’s about time to get to know them now though this album. Recommended!
